When I was VP Advertising and Online for Microsoft in the UK, Jules helped deliver a number of workshops for my Leadership Team. We focused on common goals, supporting each other, communication styles, emotions/overcoming barriers and conflict resolution, among others over the course of a year plus. When I was Sales and Marketing Director of Stewart Milne Timber Systems, I wanted to uplift our customer service and uplift our sales revenue so I brought Jules in. The big thing with Jules that worked, was that we flushed out what the real issues were at the beginning and the ones that would make the difference.  We needed to build better teamwork and cross fertilise ideas between Key Account Sales and the Sales Teams who were scattered and everyone across the business who interacted with them, especially post sales and people out on site.  We needed our planning and monitoring to be more effective. Working with Jules, I was able to see much more clearly what we needed to do to get the results I wanted quickly and we set where we wanted to be within a timeframe.  We thought we were going to have to work 28 hours a day and we realised in conversation with Jules, that it wasn’t about working more and more but about working smarter.

The thing we did first, which was excellent, and the thing that Jules does so well is that she had one to one’s with my team and they told her things very quickly that they hadn’t said before. People were very open with her and we had all sorts of pleasant things come out of that.  We knew we wanted to improve our customer focus in order to create advocates, especially with our Key Accounts and we put together a programme of events (conference, workshops, coaching) and implementation which was tailored and targeted to achieve tangible results quickly. Jules’ programme created better teamwork and understanding between the Project Managers, Sales Team and After Sales. We looked at where we were vulnerable and improved our infrastructure and processes including the communication lines into and back from our customers.  Whilst the sales people had plans, they needed to be more detailed with conversion rates and lead times to achieve their budget.

We created team values, representing the company values and gave our teams communication and mindset skills so that they could improve their impact on each other and the customer and were better able to deal with objections. This was very motivating and created the engagement we needed for them to all work together with a renewed common purpose. The managers attended workshops to improve their leadership skills and ability to stay in control without micromanaging. The Key Account Managers built key accounts plans which were complex because our key accounts had several sites, several decision makers, influencers and product requirements. 

We needed a strategy for each key account including a review of the history, potential, competition, current framework agreements, the decision making processes and then they could make decisions on steps going forward.  We had some of this in place but Jules helped us to get in full control, create strategic plans and then detailed numbers for each funnel.  These key accounts not only involved the key account salesman but others across the business both internally and on site and Jules helped us to create formal processes for each of these relationships.   Each person involved in delivering on this key account (Project Manager, Site Manager) was brought on board from the start so that they understood their contribution in delivering an excellent service. 

For the first time in my career we had people who had always been at loggerheads or mis-communicating between departments now engaged and understanding what the other needed, all facing in the same direction. We used time constructively and I was able to think strategically and plan where the business needed to be going. The one-to-one’s I had with Jules were key in enabling me to see things clearly and act on the information I had.

In the time Jules worked with us, we achieved an average of 20% growth year on year which is phenomenal, especially as a house builder at the time in a recession. The individuals in the team developed as people and in their abilities to produce. They’re better able to communicate and see their value to the business.

I first worked with Jules in 2006 while I was Head of Sales Operations for Getty Images when she helped us to successfully integrate acquired brands into the developing Getty Images Brand. We needed to achieve a culture where openness, accountability and creativity could flourish. These changes needed to last whilst, at the same time, achieving financial quick wins.

We worked with Jules over a number of years and we took the best practice embedded in the UK teams to the global audience. In the UK Jules helped us to increase turnover by over 22% in the space of 2 years.

I hired Jules again when I became VP Sales and Operations in NY, where we needed to complete a successful business transformation and restructure exercise. Jules worked with the North American teams to help us embed culture change and upskill sales competencies.

In June 2017 as VP Customer Operations at Abcam I hire Jules again, the objective was to achieve a step change in NPS by aligning our support functions; Supply chain, IT, Logistics, Quality and Finance with the needs of the customer. Jules ran a global NPS conference for our SVP's across functions and facilitated mindset and skills coaching sessions with these groups.

The objective was for every function to take ownership for the customer experience, despite being in a role that did not interface with the customer. This helped the communication between the teams that are key players in the end-to-end customer journey and created a camaraderie with the focus on the customer. This workshop was subsequently rolled out across our Asia and North American teams. After the successful implementation of the NPS programme, working with Jules we focused on a lead generation programme. Our focus was 'selling through service'. Jules facilitated an improvement in the capability of the leaders, imparted coaching skills and upskilled the team both in caring for the customer and in how to sell.

Very quickly we saw an uptick in sales through this programme which out-performed the expected ROI. I would recommend Jules for any project where you want to get a result in terms of team culture, NPS, the customer experience and sales revenue.

As well as running a team of developers, I've got lots of other things to do and I’ve got a very diverse team working in different parts of the business. Before I had these tools, in terms of managing and getting everything I needed to get done I was very busy, very stressed, I had a lot of catching up first thing and last thing, doing the things I should have got done during the day.  It  now feels as if things are getting easier to do even though the business is even busier.   

When I was really busy like this, my team was left to their own devices and there were definitely days where I knew they needed me but I was like a bear with a sore head in getting the bits I needed to get done until I could get on top of my workload to free up some time to get back to them. This management tool box puts a lot of shape around the work that the team’s doing and that I’m doing. It very much helps to define responsibility and ownership. So I’m more in control and I know they’re more guided.  While I’m busy they know what they’re supposed to be achieving. It feels great and it feels as if we’re getting

somewhere instead of being bogged down.   

Even with having to put some time aside to implement the tools, putting them into place means things are getting easier and I notice the difference when we bring on new employees and contractors, it’s much easier to get them up to speed with the way they work and the way they operate and what we’re doing. I’ve put remarkably little time into getting this in place for the benefits given.  The bite sized chunks of work to implement this lets me get on with other things.  If it would have been taking three or four days out and then more later it would have been a non-starter.  

Benefits to me of having the toolbox are that it’s given me confidence that there’s the right action happening and transparency.  In terms of the business I’ll be a lot more effective which in turn will help my team be more effective.  I’ve learnt a lot, especially being someone who has very technical skills historically and that’s how I’ve got to where I am, the communication skills and the management skills and toolbox are what I needed to be able to go to the next level.
